Can I substitute maple syrup in Master Cleanse Lemonade?

Some people on the Master Clean diet find the maple syrup really cloying and too sweet for them. You may be wondering if there is another ingredient that can substitute for maple syrup. Fortunately there are a few different options.

If you really don’t like maple syrup, there’s no need to suffer for the taste. So try some of the suggested substitutions.

The most commonly recommended substitutes for maple syrup in Master Cleanse are molasses or evaporated raw sugarcane juice. Dr. Burroughs mentions both in his book The Master Cleanser. He wants to stick to raw or unrefined versions of any of the ingredients because the reason for using them is their mineral content. That’s why he just can’t use any sweetener he wants.

Evaporated cane juice used to be hard to find in certain countries, but with the growth of the health food industry it is now easier to find. If you can’t find it at your health food store (try the juice or sugar aisles), then you can order it online and have it delivered. Evaporated cane juice provides vitamin B12.

Molasses is easy to find in any supermarket. Like evaporated cane juice, molasses is a byproduct of sugar cane. It is extremely concentrated and has many minerals, including manganese, copper, iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. It is also a good source of vitamin B6.

Of the two options, molasses is probably your best option since it has many more nutrients than evaporated cane juice.
