What to look for when buying t-shirts

T-shirts are perhaps one of the most popular clothing items for men, women, and children alike. The reason for its popularity could be attributed to its versatility and durability. T-shirts can be worn as underwear or as fashionable outerwear.

Shopping for t-shirts can be a daunting process as the price and quality of the garments can vary greatly. So what should you look for when shopping for t-shirts? Read on to find out.

Fabric

When shopping for a T-shirt, select one that will hold its shape after being washed. There is nothing more frustrating than discovering that a t-shirt has become shorter or wider only after one wash. The determining factor is the structure of the fabric. T-shirts with firm, even, tight weaves are generally not only durable but can also withstand multiple launderings. Close inspection of the weave structure should show small loops that are thick and round, not stretched or drawn into long, skinny shapes.

Fiber content

100% cotton t-shirts are perfect for hot summer days; however, you may want to explore t-shirts made with different levels of blending based on your specific needs. While cotton provides absorbency and comfort, the addition of other synthetic materials, such as polyester, can improve durability and decrease shrinkage. The addition of polyester fibers can also add wrinkle resistance to garments and allows them to dry faster than all cotton garments.

shrinkage strength

If left unfinished, all cotton T-shirts can shrink up to five percent, which is more than a size change. Whenever possible, try to buy pre-shrunk cotton t-shirts or cotton-poly blend t-shirts to maintain proper sizing after washing. If in doubt, read the information provided on the labels for information on the shrink resistance of garments.

clothes cut

The fit of a T-shirt depends almost entirely on the cut. When shopping for a T-shirt, make sure it’s cut with the grain and the vertical loops are at right angles to the bottom edge rather than slanted. Side seams should be in the correct position rather than lopsided forward or backward. An ill-fitting T-shirt will not only look unstylish but also uncomfortable.

Some shirts are made without side seams as they are cut from circular knit tubes. When purchasing such shirts, you should check for even “grain” and a straight rather than crooked garment body. The sleeves should also not appear lopsided at the armhole and should be of sufficient size.

garment construction

Like the cut of the garment, the seam is equally important. When buying T-shirts, make sure the stitching is smooth, even, and not broken. Seams around the edge of the neckline and sleeves should be smooth and even and not appear stretched.

neckband

The neckband should be made of a fabric that is firm enough to stretch over the head and then spring back into shape. A firm point rib is often used. A nylon-blend rib provides additional reinforcement.

Style/Decorative Effects

There are countless varieties of shirts available to choose from. The color, style, transfers or printed images and embellishments you choose are up to your personal choice. However, the color choice, necklines, hem length, sleeve length, and cut should all complement your body. Choose t-shirt styles that enhance your best features.
