What area of dog training will be most in demand?

This is a question that I have received on more than one occasion. I thought I’d take a few minutes and give you my take on the question.

Question: Hello, I am researching for a second career at age 50. I have no experience in dog training, just a true love of dogs. What area of dog training is expected to be most in demand in the future?

I feel the number one area of dog training has been and will continue to be training the obedience and behavior of man’s best friend, our loyal family dog. Dogs have become an important member of the family in many homes across the country. Because of this popularity, there will always be a need for obedience dog trainers to help train these barking and jumping additions to the family.

Obedience training will include everything from group obedience classes, private home training, as well as training programs and kennel boards. Being a knowledgeable trainer will help many new dog owners achieve their goals of having a well-behaved family pet.

Obedience trainers can actually operate out of their homes by holding classes in the dog owner’s homes and group classes in area parking lots or parks.

There are other areas of dog training, including detection dogs for law enforcement, that can generate substantial income. These types of training require more training and an actual training facility where these dogs can be housed and trained.

If he could only do one type of training, it would certainly be obedience and behavior training. Obedience Trainers will be here forever!

You know, a lot of people call me and say they want to be a dog trainer because they hate their job and don’t like what they do. They want to find something else that they can enjoy. You know, it makes me realize that I’m probably the luckiest man alive because I love what I do, plain and simple. And as the old saying goes “if you love what you do, you will never have to work a day in your life. That’s what the dog training business has done for me. I honestly love what I’ve been able to do all these years. If working with dogs is a passion for you, you can be in the same position where you can enjoy getting up every morning and doing what you love instead of getting up every morning and going to work.”
