The importance of cleaning and maintaining your DVD player

Just like any other electronic device, the DVD player seems to attract a lot of dust, fingerprints, pollen, and a host of contaminants, all of which affect its effectiveness. Without regular maintenance and care, your machine will not work efficiently. The DVD player is becoming the main theater these days as people choose to watch movies in the comfort of their own homes. Since you can’t eliminate your entertainment needs, learn simple ways to clean your machine from time to time.

You need a regular DVD cleaning regimen to avoid seeing grainy images. Most people clean their players on the outside very effectively, but they probably don’t know how to clean the inside. The interior is what really needs proper cleaning because it is what attracts more dust and can be dirtier than the exterior. There are some household products that can be used to do a clean job without much difficulty.

After turning off the DVD player, unplugging it from the TV and power source, place it on a sturdy desk or table, ready to get started. Use some simple household items like rubbing alcohol dipped in a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab to gently rub the outside of the machine. Remember to especially clean the ventilation areas, as this is where you are likely to find a lot of dust. Cleaning the vents is extremely important because clogged vents will not allow heat from inside to escape, leading to overheating. If you can, use a bit of compressed air gently to remove any dust buildup.

Your DVD player will tell you when it needs some cleaning inside; it will start to skip, fail to load, or the audio and video signals will become weak. This will require lens cleaning to ensure it reads discs correctly. The easiest way to clean the inside of your DVD player is to purchase commercial DVD lens cleaning discs that are available at electronics stores.

This is a highly recommended method because you don’t have to open the player at all. The specialized cleaning disc has bristles on the top so when it is inserted into the player and it starts to spin; those bristles that are raised will easily clean the lens. As soon as you’re done with the cleaning cycle, your lens will almost always be clean and your DVD player should play without a problem. You should schedule your DVD player to be cleaned every four to six weeks.
