The biometric future?

Biometric technology basically means using a unique aspect of your biology to identify yourself and gain access to something, like a building or a vehicle. It used to be a vision we saw of the future, often seen in movie scenes that were futuristic in nature. However, the reality is that biometric technology is already available in our lifetime and is slowly being added to the lives of many people.

The three ways biometrics can influence your future include:

1. Biometric access for buildings. This is the kind of thing we used to see in the movies, scanning a fingerprint or an eyeball to get into a building. The advantage of this is that you don’t need a code to enter, which is easier to forget, or an identification card, which could easily be stolen and used to gain access to a secure building or site. Biometric access allows people to be in control of a site, analyzing who has entered and exited the building, and what time people have checked in. It gives a business owner a better view of the site and control of it. For sites that are high security, this is already being installed on your premises. However, it could soon be something we see in our homes. It means that only people who have access to your home can get in, which means fewer opportunities for burglars and you don’t need complicated keys.

2. Electronic access to vehicles. The previous idea could be transferred to our vehicles. In fact, some cars already have this idea installed, but it has not yet become widespread. Having access to our cars using a fingerprint instead of a key, and being able to start the ignition with your fingerprint means the car can stay more secure. Hopefully it would also put an end to the growing practice of stealing high-end luxury cars for hire, synchronizing the car biometrically with a small group of people (a family unit, say) would remove the temptation to steal cars, and thus It would possibly lower our ever-increasing insurance premiums.

3. Electronic payments. Perhaps a little later in the future we will see electronic payments. Cards will be a thing of the past! Paying for your purchases will be made easier by simply giving your fingerprint or eye scan, and payment will be added to your account based on your unique biology. Again, this means no one can take your card and withdraw money from your account or make payments without your knowledge, and it gives you more control over your payments and finances. Identity fraud would literally take on a new meaning.
