The American Bulldog – What a Great Dog!

Of course, it takes an owner with strong leadership skills to get the message across that rock head. But, once Bully knows who’s boss, there’s no problem.

It is best to start when they are still very young… because your Bully will put you to the test. When socialized and trained with positive reinforcement techniques and without punishment, you will not find a happier, more energetic, loyal, silly, loving and fun dog.

The amazing thing about them is that when you start training them as early as possible, they are very sensitive and really want to please their owner. To get their attention, all you need is a change in the tone of your voice. They respond instantly! Wait too long and you may have more challenges.

They are medium in size, but extremely powerful. Not the best dog if you have small children or older visitors! They’re so excited to meet and greet that they might take someone down by accident.

They have a high prey drive, so it’s a good idea to monitor and desensitize them to smaller pets while they are still pups. It also helps prevent possible aggression from the dog.

If you are a couch potato, the American Bulldog is not the right dog for you. They need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They can be destructive if left alone without something to keep them occupied. They love to have mental problems and you will be surprised how quickly they realize it. The key ingredients when training an American Bulldog are confidence and consistency.

Their egos love to be petted with lots of praise and hugs. That’s what makes them easy to train. When they know they’ve pleasured you, they strut like peacocks, with that little bump for a tail bobbing back and forth!

They can be goofy and will put on a show whenever they get the chance, especially when they know you appreciate their humor.

Bullies tend to have gas and sure can snore! Some drool more than others. If you are neat, any dog in the Bully family may not be the right dog for you. If you have drooling, you will feel naked without a towel over your shoulder.

Okay, they look intimidating, but don’t judge the book by the cover. They are usually great with people. Most truly believe that everyone they meet is their new best friend.

Bottom line: don’t discount the American Bulldog. Do your homework. Be careful where you get them. Sound responsible breeding is important. They may not be fuzzy or what we normally think of as cute. However, they have an endearing face and make truly wonderful pets. To know them, is to love them!
