Taylor Lautner’s exercise routine as Jacob Black in New Moon

Before describing Taylor Lautner’s training, here’s a brief biography…

Taylor Lautner was born on February 12, 1992. She was also 17 years old when Twilight New Moon was filmed. From the age of 6 to 13 he performed in martial arts. At the age of 12 he won the Junior World Championship as a black belt in karate. Lautner began his acting career in 2001, and in 2008 he played Jacob Black, the Native American character in Twilight.

The director considered casting someone else to play Jacob Black in New Moon

New Moon director Catherine Hardwicke considered casting someone else to replace Taylor Lautner. She wanted someone with more muscle and more believable to play Jacob Black. You see, Jacob becomes a werewolf in this movie and she wanted someone with a stronger physical presence than Taylor Lautner.

Taylor had to quickly gain muscle or possibly lose his role in New Moon

Fortunately, Taylor had a solid background in martial arts that helped him get this ripped look. If he were a 17-year-old from a less athletic background, there’s no way he could have displayed the same degree of muscle tone in such a short time.

Jacob Black’s Secret to Perfect Abs

Taylor Lautner’s abs weren’t just the result of the 9 months of training leading up to the filming of New Moon. Years of her martial arts training created a muscular density and muscular maturity that you don’t normally see until someone is in their 20s. People who compete in martial arts gain power by tightening their core… this tightening over time develops hard, defined muscles in the abdominals. The way to reveal abs is to reduce to a low percentage of body fat, but the reason Taylor Lautner had an outstanding six pack was due to her martial arts background.

The muscle building part for Taylor was easy.

Taylor quickly gained 20 pounds of mass due to her age. What fitness magazines never tell you is that you can easily gain mass when you first train. The amount of muscle Taylor put into her body was the natural amount of muscle she was supposed to have. It’s not big by any stretch of the imagination, which is a good thing. Like almost any youngster I’ve worked with, Taylor was able to complete quickly and approach her genetic potential quickly. She did it in 9 months as she had so much time that she could dedicate to this… this usually takes 12-24 months for most guys.

When he was interviewed about how he got in shape for New Moon…

If you watch any of Taylor Lautner’s interviews, you’ll notice that he’s pretty vague about his workouts…he says things like “I exercised a lot and ate a lot.” Honestly, this is all it takes for a young man in his late teens or early 20s to gain those 15-25 pounds. The trick is to lose weight and mark. This is where I come in and help men and women achieve that lean “Hollywood” look…
