Portrush, County Antrim – rich history and plenty of charm!
Portrush, County Antrim is probably one of Ireland’s best known coastal fishing towns in County Antrim. Older townspeople enjoy exchanging great memories of their years growing up in Portrush and of vacations spent in this quaint little town. Like numerous small towns and seaside towns, Portrush was once simply a safe harbor and safe fishing port that has grown into a busy seaside town, offering pleasant walks along the beach. Portrush’s two beautiful beaches that are often used by water sports enthusiasts, especially body boarders and surfers.
Portrush is also home to Barry’s Amusements, Ireland’s largest amusement park. Portrush offers fun for the whole family including cinemas, restaurants, shopping centres, bars and pubs, nightclubs, beaches, theaters and much more to choose from. The city’s historic architecture dates back to the early 1960s. The meaning of Portrush is Headland Harbour, which relates to the city’s location.
The Skerries; a rocky patch off the coast and is an essential habitat for a number of indigenous species, including wildlife that is unique to Northern Ireland.
The annual Portrush Air Show usually takes place in September each year, as well as the famous annual Portrush “Beach Party”, which brings famous headlining acts to town. In 2006 the inaugural Beach Party was headlined by Fatboy Slim and in 2007 Basement Jaxx and The Happy Mondays headlined the party. In 2008, the Beach Party was headlined by The Chemical Brothers. There was no beach party in 2009. It is not known if a beach party will be held again in Portrush. However, the North West 200 motorcycle race runs through Portrush and draws crowds of up to 150,000.
The Royal Portrush Golf Club opened in 1888 and traditionally one couldn’t help but be amazed at Co Antrim’s respectable links. The world’s best known players, both men and women, have enjoyed the hospitality of the incredible Royal Portrush for the last 120 years. It is the only golf course outside Great Britain that had the honor of hosting the spectacular Open Championship.
Portrush has a lot to offer when it comes to holiday accommodation, from hotels to Bed and Breakfasts, self contained cabins, campsites and caravan parks.
Portrush is located on a mile-long peninsula, enjoying spectacular views of Dunluce Castle and Donegal, as well as the Giant’s Causeway. He is a neighbor of Portstewart.
