Mosaic Patio Furniture – Old Designs Are Popular Again

Every year outdoor furniture manufacturers find new ways to bring something unique to the market. They do this by increasing their collections and/or maybe just borrowing ideas from the story. When it comes to borrowing from history, a good example is the currently popular mosaic furniture.

Mosaic art dates back 4,000 years and is done by creating images or designs with small pieces of colored glass, ceramic, stone, or some other material. Mosaic floors have been found in the ruins of fourth-century Roman dwellings, as well as on the walls of ancient chapels.

history repeats itself

Fast forward to 2009, where consumers can now choose from a vast selection of mosaic-patterned outdoor furniture. Look for more options in patio dining tables, bistro table fire pits, and baker’s racks. These items are popular because each one is made by hand and no two pieces are exactly alike. Mosaic pieces also make great focal points due to the unique pattern.

For outdoor living, many of the mosaic tables use glass and travertine tiles. The glass usually used is stained glass that is molded to a smooth finish. Marble and tumbled stones are also used in mosaic tables. The exquisite designs and patterns on the surface vary widely, from geometric style patterns to themes such as: Hummingbird, Bay Leaf, Dragonfly, Garden, Morocco and many more. Other patio items that include mosaic crafts include children’s chairs, accent tables, umbrella bases, and fire pits.

Because mosaic surfaces are made by hand, compared to other materials, they are brittle. This isn’t to say you can’t feel comfortable using the surface freely, but during the off-season, take precautions and store your furniture indoors: especially in the cold winter.
