Invisible fences for dogs: how to create a null wire that does not correct your pet

When you install your own invisible dog fence, you’ll probably want to install at least some cable that does not emit a corrective signal; for example, the wire that connects your transmitter (the device that powers your fence) to the outside containment circuit. Fortunately, creating “canceled” dog fence wire is quick and easy when you know what to do!

To create a canceled transfer:

  1. Cut a piece of wire that is more than twice the length you will ultimately need. For example, if you want to use the canceled cable to connect two flower beds that are 20 feet apart, cut a piece of cable about 45 feet long.
  2. Bend the cable in half around an anchor point. You can use a garage door handle, a small tree, or a metal post as an anchor; just make sure you choose something very sturdy that won’t move.
  3. Insert both ends of your cable into the end of a power drill. Make sure to close the tips of the drill tight, just like you would a drill bit.
  4. Gently press the power trigger of the drill. You want the cable to wrap around itself fairly tightly, but not so tightly that it breaks.
  5. Cut the cable that is wrapped around your anchor point. You are now left with a long piece of twisted wire that has four free ends.

When you place two lengths of dog fence wire close together, you cancel the correction signal that the wires would normally give off. So you can use the braided wire you just created to connect the areas that your dog should be correcting with the areas where your dog can roam.
