How to assemble a spinner for trout fishing

More than twenty years ago I was taught a great technique for assembling spoons for trout fishing. This method can actually be used to rig spinners for fish other than trout, but is most effective when used in the flowing waters of a river or stream. The man who taught me this method was a bait fisherman and needed an efficient way to switch from bait fishing to spinner fishing as fishing conditions changed.

The first thing to keep in mind when using spinners for trout fishing is that you should use light lines and small spinners. Your fishing line must be six pound proof. in the heaviest, and your spinners should be between 1/12 and ΒΌ of an ounce. The spinners you use should be the size of the quarry that trout normally eat, which is normally quite small.

Now, let’s see how to put together a spinner for trout fishing, shall we? Start by grabbing the end of your line and cutting a piece of line between eighteen and twenty-four inches. Set this piece of line aside. Now tie a small barrel swivel to the end of the line coming out of the end of your rod, size 10 to 18 will suffice. Once your swivel barrel is attached, take the piece of line you cut and tie it to the opposite end of the swivel barrel.

At this point, tie the spinner to the other end of the piece of string that you had previously cut. What you have now is your spinner at the end of your line, and your barrel spins about twelve inches above your spinner. Having this barrel spin between its spinner and the end of your rod will help keep the line from twisting and keep the spinner from working as designed.

This way of mounting a spinner is very efficient, but also very light. You will need to add some weight to effectively launch your turntable. This is accomplished by adding split shot sinkers to your line up the rotating barrel. Adding split shot sinker will give you the weight needed to cast.

This way of mounting a spinner for trout fishing helps prevent line twisting and allows your spinner to perform the way it was designed. This makes a big difference in the number of bites you get. Now you know how to assemble a spinner to fish for trout. Give it a try and find out for yourself how effective this method is.
