How does a high sperm count influence the sex of your baby?

I sometimes hear from couples who have been trying to get pregnant for so long that they have had the man’s sperm count tested to make sure there are no problems. Some then contact me and wonder if this test indicated a high sperm count, does this make them more likely to conceive a girl or a boy?

The answer to this is not so clear cut and discussions about this can get heated and controversial. There have been a few studies that have tested the ratio of X (girl production) and Y (boy production) sperm in a variety of men (including those who have girls and boys in their families and those with high sperm counts) and most of these studies have continued to find a ratio of around 50/50. Of course, this is quite similar to what we find in hospitals around the world. Mother Nature has a way of balancing the birth rates of men and women.

However, there are old wives’ tales as well as misplaced studies that indicate that a high sperm count increases the chances of conceiving a baby boy. Many people continue to believe this. However, I would take this with a grain of salt and tell you why. If natural gender selection is broken down into its simplest form, far from all controversy and disagreement, everyone can agree that if a Y chromosome from the sperm fertilizes the egg, the resulting birth is a boy. If it’s an X instead, then that results in a girl.

There is also no disagreement about the fact that literally millions of sperm, both X and Y, are engaged in a battle to fertilize the egg. But usually only one chromosome of the sperm produces it (unless you’re the weirdo who ends up with twins or multiples). There is very little or nothing you can do to control this. But while you can’t really control the Y to X ratio of sperm as it leaves the man and enters the female reproductive tract, what you can try to control is the X to Y ratio once they get close to the egg. This is achieved by modifying the PH of the woman and using the moment of conception to her best advantage.

If you want a girl, then you want to destroy or discourage as many Y’s as possible. And if you want a boy, then the X’s are in your sights. There are adjustments you can make to your diet or to your vaginal environment (through douching) that can help you achieve this. You can also do a test to see when ovulation is most likely to occur and plan conception accordingly (earlier for a girl and later for a boy is more effective).

But what does this mean if you think you already have more Y or a better chance of having a child if your partner’s or man’s sperm count is high? Well, without further arguing the validity of this point, that depends on whether you want a girl or a boy baby. If you want a boy or a child, this arguably makes your job easier. However, you should know that there will still be some X’s to deal with, even if you believe the theory that they are fewer in number. To discourage them, you can make your PH alkaline to help the Y sperm.

Now, if you believe this theory and want a girl, all is not lost. There’s still going to be a race for X for the egg. Her goal would be to make the most of what she has by making her vaginal PH acidic in order to destroy or discourage the Y’s she believes in or in greater numbers. I really don’t buy the theory that a high sperm count favors boys. However, even if this is true, there is more to gender selection than those ratios. There are always races by Y and X for the egg. The real question is who will make it first and how can you make life impossible or more difficult for those you don’t want to win.
