Distinctive Features
The spotted bat is scientifically known as Euderma maculatum. In this article, both nicknames will be used to describe this interesting species of bat. Its most distinguishable features are probably its ears. They are large, and quite striking due to their pinkish tone. His wings are also a transparent pink. As for their body, they are easily recognizable by their jet black fur and large white spots. They have two white spots on the shoulders and two more on the rump. Underneath, their bellies are soft, stiff white fur.
Habitat
The most common regions to find the Euderma maculatum species are areas with open forests and rugged terrain, arid lands, and desert scrub. In fact, they migrate to warmer regions once winter sets in, and even fall into torpor throughout the season. They spread across Canada, south through the western United States, and even as far as Mexico. They enjoy high cliffs, open canyons, and of course, like any other bat, caves. They also almost always perch near viable water sources, such as springs, rivers, lakes, and streams.
Diet
Euderma maculatum are insectivorous, which means that they eat mainly insects. They especially like moths. The interesting thing is that they don’t eat the wings of the moth, only the torso!

Spotted bats, like all small bats, have a long list of predators that will choose them for food at any time of day. This includes owls, mountain lions, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and most of all, humans. Overdevelopment, pesticides, hunting and more are ways we threaten the lives of bats.
Condition
Although the spotted bat is not technically on the endangered species list, it is considered to be one of North America’s rarest bat species.
Life
Female bats produce a single baby each year, usually in late May or June. Baby bats are called pups. Researchers don’t know much about the lifespan of spotted bat species, however, bats can live up to 20 years in the wild, depending on region, species, and various other factors. They live solitary lives as a colony and tend to be very territorial.
