Dog obedience training for your Yorkie Terrier
Training a Yorkie to do anything is fun and challenging. Obedience training is very important to them, but being Terriers they are very strong willed. They are very smart and often want to do only what they want to do. Despite their small size, they do not see themselves as small dogs. More like a Great Dane in a small package, because most of them have very strong attitudes. They can have a tendency to bark when excited, so a silent and obedient command would be nice to know. They have great hearing and make great watchdogs, even if they are small. They will definitely alert you to any intruders! They are real ankle biters!
If you have a Yorkie puppy, you can enroll him in beginner obedience or puppy kindergarten, or you can housetrain him yourself. They are so cute that the trend is to spoil them! TIP: They know they are adorable and they know how to train you fast!
If you decide to house train your Yorkie alone, you will have a great bonding experience. Yorkshire Terriers have a great spirit and a lot of heart. And being so smart there isn’t much they can’t be trained to do. Within reason, of course. Dangerous high jumps are not allowed, as they could cause serious injury or death.
By speaking clearly and distinctly, in a moderate tone, you can teach your Yorkie a large vocabulary. No screaming of course.
These little dogs are great companions, as all they really want is to be with their human partner. I have had the honor of living with Yorkshire Terriers for 14 years and have learned a lot from them, probably more than they have learned from me. They have very defined personalities and they are all different, but they will make you smile. And we can all wear a smile these days!
