Cocker Spaniel Agility Training for Beginners

Being the owner of a Cocker Spaniel, you may have been considering joining an agility training class. If so, you’re in for a real treat. Dogs love agility training classes because they give them a new environment and obstacles to experiment with. They are introduced to ramps, poles, jumps, and colorful things that challenge their thinking and athletic ability.

Requirements

Most training groups will require your dog to attend an obedience class to learn basic commands. Groups do not tolerate any signs of aggression, as this only disrupts the class and could result in the dogs or people being injured.

Performance

Your dog’s performance will depend on his temperament and how well he listens to you. It’s more about the dog than the breed of the dog. However, Cocker Spaniels have proven to be good candidates. They are intelligent and eager to please. Your obedience class trainer will be able to tell you more about how well your dog will respond. You may also want to contact a local agility group to have your Cocker Spaniel tested as well. Request a one-on-one consultation. They will be able to provide you with valuable information and expectations of the training involved. Ask if you can sit in on a lesson so you can see the class in action. You will find that they are accommodating. Some classes are more competitive than others, so it’s a good idea to find a group that your dog is a good fit for.

Training

Training begins with simple warm-ups to familiarize the dog with its surroundings and begins when the handler has his dog’s attention. It is the handler who will first show your dog what to do. In some classes, the dog owner will follow the lead of the trainer and will also be given guidance. The obstacles will be simple at first, progressing to more advanced training as the pup progresses. Lessons generally last around an hour per week and can last up to six to eight weeks. Training continues at home, so he must be willing to put in the required time.

How to find agility class

It should be pretty easy to find a group to work with. Your vet will be a good referral source. Often the vet’s staff members also know where to go for agility training. Attend an agility competition and socialize with handlers and dog owners. You will learn a lot from them as most are willing to help.

Dog agility training is great fun for the owner and the Cocker Spaniel. The classes will provide information on the full scope of training and competition. Good agility training is a fun activity and never forced. Participating in sports is great fun for your pup and a great way to further develop his bond with your Cocker Spaniel.

No matter what your goals are, going through an agility class just once will make your dog a better citizen.
