Causes of crime in urban areas
Crime is an illegal act that deserves punishment. The nature of the crime varies greatly and the classification of the crime differs depending on the area of jurisdiction. The scientific study of crime is called Criminology. The causes of crime fall into four main categories: psychological, biological, economic, and sociological.
psychological causes
One’s personality and predispositions induce one to commit crimes. One relates the occurrence that happens in the environment with its traits and predispositions and reacts. Freudian psychologists are of the opinion that a balance in a person’s id, ego, and superego is vital to leading a normal life. If there is an imbalance between them, then disorderly behavior results. While the superego influences good behavior, the predominance of the id over the superego drives to commit crimes regardless of the consequences.
biological causes
Biological causes are governed by the genetics and neurological makeup of an individual. Genetically speaking, an individual is predisposed to commit a crime if his parents have a criminal past. Neurologically, abnormalities and chemical imbalances in the brain are reasons for one to behave criminally.
Economic Causes
Poverty and deprivation cause an individual to commit crimes. Poverty leads to frustration and anger and provokes criminal activities. Criminal activity unleashes his anger. Crimes are committed under the assumption that they will end one’s deprivation. But it is not poverty and need that lead to crime. Greed is also a big contributor to criminal acts.
Sociological causes
The constantly changing lifestyle of people in urban areas is one of the main causes of crime. An individual’s position in an urban society places a limit on him, and to accommodate the pressing limitations one resorts to crime. An individual also needs to have the opportunity to learn to commit a crime, for which the environment in which he lives is useful.
Crimes are not exclusive to urban areas, they also occur in rural areas, but the degree varies. In rural areas, violence is used to resolve conflicts. Socioeconomic factors are also causes of crime in rural areas.
