Best Craigslist Alternatives

Many people may be surprised to learn that there are several other classified ad sites besides Craigslist. In this article we will see some of the alternatives that exist for buyers, sellers and marketers. Now Craigslist is the most popular by far, but there’s no reason you can’t use the other sites for more exposure in seller listings, more products and services for buyers, and of course, more marketing opportunities.

Backpage.com – Similar to Craigslist with a very minimalist design and divided into several subcategories based on US locations. You can post a local ad where you specify the location or there is a paid section where you can post to multiple locations. For marketers, there is a popular search that tells them what people are currently searching for.

Kijiji.com: If you can really spell the name correctly, then this is a very well designed site that, interestingly enough, is owned by eBay, which also owns parts of Craigslist. Like Craigslist and Backpage, this is the usual setup with city-defined areas to buy and sell, there are also several sites aimed at foreign countries listed at the bottom. The usual categories of classifieds are here and depending on the city there are a reasonable amount of listings. The UK version of this is Gumtree, mentioned below.

OLX.com – This site has a nice new design, there are localized sites for US cities and states and also versions for various countries around the world. A useful popular searches feature to see what’s hot right now. Again, this was relatively easy to list from a selling standpoint with a wide variety of common listing categories available.

Oodle.com: This one is interesting as it is used to power a number of third party sites and claims to have over 600,000 listings per day from 80,000 websites. When I checked the stats, they had over 3 million unique visitors, which is a good amount of traffic. Easy to list and has the usual categories like items for sale, services, and jobs, among others.

Gumtree.co.uk – This is a popular alternative in the UK, looking at the stats, it is currently slightly more visited than Craigslist.co.uk. The site is divided into several cities and, of course, you have to buy and sell in the place that is most suitable for where you live. This is a good site for UK surfers.

Resume

As you can see, there are some nice sites listed here that between them get around 10 million unique visitors a month. This means they are worth buying and selling as an alternative or to supplement your craigslist ad. If you’re in the UK, then Gumtree is a bit more popular than Craigslist, so it’s worth checking out.
