Arowana Care – Red Arowana – Part 1 – What is an Arowana?

Arowanas are large freshwater fish that have bony heads and elongated bodies. There are 10 different types of arowanas: four can be found in Southeast Asia, three in South America, two in Australia, and one in Africa. Known as the “King of Tropical Fish,” these fish are big: the South American arapaima (also known as the pirarucu) can grow up to 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) long, making it one of the most largest freshwater on the planet. and they are capable of extraordinary feats that few other fish can match.

For example, South American species of arowana have been known to jump up to 6 feet (2 meters) out of the water to catch birds or insects (all arowana species are carnivorous) from overhanging tree branches. It is even rumored that they can catch and eat low-flying bats. Such behavior explains why some people have nicknamed arowanas “water monkeys.” Arowanas are obedient parents; some species build nests and protect their young long after they hatch, while others keep their eggs in their mouths for safe keeping.

Arowanas are highly prized aquarium fish, especially in Asian countries. Arowanas from Southeast Asia, specifically the extremely rare red arowana, are believed by the Chinese to be lucky and bring positive Feng Shui energy. They call these fish “dragon fish” since the scales and color of the fish are reminiscent of Chinese dragon images. Some people even believe that the fish has magical powers, that it can hear death approaching and detect if someone has bad thoughts about its owner.

Having an arowana or two in your home, especially a red arowana, is considered a sign of wealth and prosperity. In fact, while these fish may be an attractive sight, care must be taken to remember that the most prized varieties are endangered species.
