Oppo Find7 review: An unassuming powerhouse

Oppo is one of the mobile phone manufacturers that people always seem to put aside, mainly due to the huge following of some of the biggest phone manufacturers. However, the company has been quite successful over the years in slipping under the radar and surprising everyone with a great phone deal. This time, they plan to surprise people once again with their new flagship phone, the Oppo Find7.

Design and function

The exterior design of the Oppo Find7 is, for lack of a better term, conservative. The Find 7 looks plain, and dare I say it, a bit dull, compared to rival companies’ flagship phones that have flashy, innovative designs. The front face is all black; the sides of the phone are flat and have no frills at all.

However, while Find7 may seem bland in design, it is ergonomic. The curved, faux carbon fiber backplate makes it easy to hold, and even though the phone is made mostly of plastic, it feels solid and well-made.

You’ll need to get a good grip on the Find7 because it’s quite large, and that’s thanks to its 5.5″ Quad HD display. Although the phone’s design is modest, it may have been done deliberately so that it has nothing to distract you from the beautiful HD screen.

hardware and performance

Under the hood, you’ll find a substantial collection of hardware. There’s the 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU that provides more than enough “oomph” for most mobile users. It also comes with 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU so you can play even the most demanding mobile games. The phone also uses its own ColorOS interface, which looks and feels very different from stock Android.
Unlike the previous Oppo N1, which has a really cool rotating camera, the Find7 decided it would stick with a traditional fixed front and rear camera.

The front camera is your run-of-the-mill 5MP front shooter, which is a bit disappointing because Find7 is a flagship phone. However, the rear camera on the Find7 is a 13MP camera that uses a Sony Exmore image sensor. The six-element lens keeps images and videos sharp. Speaking of videos, the Find7’s rear shooter can shoot videos in 4K quality, which is actually quite impressive.

The camera software used by Oppo for the Find7 is really nifty. It offers a number of shooting modes and settings, the most notable of which is the Ultra-HD mode which takes 10 consecutive HD photos and stitches the best ones together into a single 50MP image.

Price and Verdict

The Oppo Find7 retails for around US$600 without a subscription. Even though the exterior of the phone is a bit bland, its performance and hardware are nothing to sneeze at. The Find7 can perform just as well, if not better, than most other phones in its price range. The stunning display and powerful innards make the Find7 one of the best phones out there and it definitely deserves your attention.
