A Puggle Fact Sheet

Puggles are a fairly recent breed of designer dog. There is a large amount of material available about them on the Internet. What is provided here is brief facts about the breed that you can use to search for more information.

o ORIGIN: The Puggle is a cross between a Beagle and a Pug

o SIZE: An adult Puggle will be 15-20 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 15-30 pounds.

o CLASSIFICATION: Due to their small size and calm demeanor they are classified as lap dogs.

o REGISTRATION: Due to their condition as mestizo or Hybrid, they are not recognized by any of the main canine clubs in the country. Mixed breed dog clubs offer registration for Puggles.

o APPEARANCE: While fawn is the most common color for Puggles, black and multicolored dogs are frequently seen. The dog’s color in no way reflects its health. Being a recently developed breed, their appearance will vary somewhat depending on the physical characteristics they inherit. They have a tail similar to that of a Beagle but tends to be curly, like that of a Pug. Puggle’s jaws show an underbite that they have inherited from the Pug.

o TEMPERAMENT: Puggles have the playful, affable qualities of the Pug along with the more energetic nature of the Beagle. They are excellent apartment dogs. They retain the friendly and calm nature of both the beagle and the pug. Loyal, patient and calm, they are excellent with children. Very sociable, gets along with strangers and is usually well behaved in a new environment. Puggles have inherited the hunting instincts of the Beagle and are great backyard hunters, enjoying stalking and chasing squirrels and other intruders into their yards.

o HEALTH: Its Beagle characteristics such as a longer and more defined snout mean that they do not suffer from the respiratory problems of Pugs. Their Beagle lineage also gives them a stronger body structure, which means they are not prone to the joint and skin problems that Pugs face. They are active dogs and need regular walks. Their beagle blood gives them a love of running, but this needs to be controlled in hot weather as their smaller nasal cavities, inherited from the Pug, make them very easily out of breath. Beyond this, all that is required are general health precautions and regular vaccinations.

o MAINTENANCE: Puggles are not high maintenance dogs. Regular bathing, tooth brushing, ear cleaning and nail trimming are all regular care they need, plus of course regular check-ups at the vet. Although they have short fur, they tend to shed, especially during the winter, so regular brushing with a brush is required to remove the hair.

o EXERCISE: His beagle blood makes the Puggle an active dog, but not too active. Regular play in the house and a brisk walk or two each day will take care of the Puggle’s exercise needs.
